Two thousand years ago native people called Tequesta settled at a strategic location where the Miami River meets Biscayne Bay. Spanish missionaries, Seminole Indians, African slaves, resolute pioneers and a millionaire named Flagler followed them to this spot and the Magic City was born in 1896. Today the mouth of the river is the starting point for a Downtown Miami walking tour that will introduce you to the business and financial districts, the tallest building, the oldest man-made object, the first bar, the bay front park where President Franklin Roosevelt was nearly assassinated, and the Cuban Ellis Island among other things. A free trolley and rail system connect the downtown neighborhoods which expands the possibilities of what you can see with your own two feet.
